Digital Advertising: Why Transparency Matters More Than Ever
Learn how IAB Canada's TCF framework helps publishers manage user consent, improve transparency, and support responsible digital advertising.
Data privacy has become an increasingly important topic in digital advertising. People want to understand how their personal information is being used and, more importantly, have a say in how it's handled.
For publishers, this goes beyond displaying a consent banner on their website. It also means making sure visitors' choices are properly communicated to the different technology partners involved in serving advertising.
And given how complex our industry can be, that's not always as straightforward as it sounds.
Multiple Partners, One Shared Challenge
A publisher's website may rely on several advertising technologies, including ad servers, programmatic platforms, data providers, measurement tools, and monetization solutions.
Each plays a different role, but all need to account for users' privacy choices where relevant to their data-processing activities.
That's one of the reasons IAB Canada introduced the Transparency & Consent Framework Canada (TCF Canada).
The framework gives publishers and their technology partners a common approach to communicating information about personal data processing and users' privacy preferences.
In practice, it helps publishers identify the vendors they work with, explain why certain information may be used, collect visitors' choices, and communicate those preferences to the appropriate partners.
Why Does the Vendor List Matter?
IAB Canada maintains an official list of companies registered to participate in TCF Canada.
To be included, companies must provide information about their data-processing activities and agree to the framework's policies and terms.
Once approved, they receive a vendor ID and are added to the official list.
For publishers and Consent Management Platforms (CMPs), this makes it easier to identify participating vendors and manage how users' privacy preferences are communicated.
It's worth noting, however, that registration doesn't replace each organization's own legal responsibilities.
Transparency Is Also About Trust
Beyond privacy requirements, transparency plays an important role in the relationship between publishers and their audiences.
When visitors better understand how their information may be used, they're in a better position to make informed decisions.
For publishers, a more structured approach to consent also helps clarify the role of technology partners, communicate user preferences more consistently, and maintain greater control over their advertising environment.
Our Commitment at M32
At M32, we're registered as a TCF Canada vendor and listed on IAB Canada's official Vendor List.
This reflects our commitment to supporting publishers with their monetization strategies while taking privacy and personal data protection seriously.
Our role goes beyond optimizing advertising revenue. We also want to help our publisher partners navigate an increasingly complex technology landscape, with the right tools and practices in place.
